Common questions

How do I play?

Each round, one square on the 3×3 grid lights up and a letter is spoken aloud. Your job is to remember what happened N turns ago.

  1. At N-2, wait for the third round before tapping anything.
  2. Tap Position if the lit square is the same one as 2 turns back.
  3. Tap Sound if the spoken letter is the same one as 2 turns back.
  4. Both, one or neither can match in a round. If nothing matches, tap nothing.

It is deliberately hard at first. Most people start at N-1 or N-2 and move up over a few weeks.

What is free, and what is Pro?

N-1 and N-2 are free, with no time limit, no ads and no account. Everything else in the app — your results, streaks, charts and history — is free too.

Pro unlocks N-3, N-4 and N-5. You can buy it monthly, yearly, or once as a lifetime unlock. Monthly and yearly start with a 7-day free trial if you have not used one before.

How is my score worked out?

Position and sound are scored separately, and every round counts on each. There are four outcomes per round:

  • Hit — there was a match and you tapped. Correct.
  • Correct rejection — there was no match and you did not tap. Also correct.
  • Miss — there was a match and you did not tap.
  • False alarm — there was no match and you tapped.

Your score is the share of rounds you got right: hits plus correct rejections, divided by the rounds played. Correctly leaving a non-match alone earns credit, and tapping everything does not score well.

Can I change the voice, or train in silence?

Yes. In Settings you can switch the spoken letter between a male and a female voice, and the change applies from your next session.

Silent mode turns the audio off completely and shows the letter on screen instead, so you can train on a train or in an office. The letter still has to be remembered the same way, so the exercise is unchanged.

Does it work on iPad?

Yes. Dual N-Back is a universal app, and the layout is built for the bigger screen rather than stretched. Your levels, results and streak are kept per device, because nothing is uploaded or synced between devices.

How do I restore a purchase, or cancel?

If you have bought Pro before — on this device or another one signed in to the same Apple Account — open Settings in the app and tap Restore Purchases.

Subscriptions are managed by Apple, not by us. To change or cancel, open the iOS Settings app, tap your name, then Subscriptions. Cancelling stops the next renewal; you keep Pro until the period you have paid for ends.

Does Dual N-Back collect any data?

No. There is no account, no analytics and no tracking, and the app has no servers. Your sessions are stored only on your device. Read the privacy policy.
