Common questions

I deleted photos. Why hasn't my space come back?

Photos keeps deleted items in Recently Deleted for 30 days, so you can change your mind. The space comes back when they're removed from there: automatically after 30 days, or straight away if you empty it. Only you can empty it; Tidyroll can't do it for you.

  1. Open the Photos app.
  2. Scroll down to Utilities and tap Recently Deleted.
  3. Unlock it with Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode.
  4. Tap Select, then Delete All.
Why does Settings show a different number?

Tidyroll counts the photos and videos themselves. Settings › General › iPhone Storage counts differently, so the two numbers rarely match. That's normal.

  • Optimise iPhone Storage: if it's on, iOS keeps small versions on your device and the originals in iCloud. Settings may count the space iOS could free on its own.
  • Recently Deleted: deleted photos still take space for 30 days, until it's emptied, both on your device and in iCloud.
  • iOS counts differently: Settings adds things Tidyroll can't see, such as caches, shared albums and system data, and updates on its own schedule.

Tidyroll measures sizes from the files themselves wherever it can. When a size is an estimate, it says "about".

What does Optimise iPhone Storage change?

With iCloud Photos and Optimise iPhone Storage on, many originals live only in iCloud, and your device keeps smaller versions. So Tidyroll shows two numbers for everything: what deleting it frees on this iPhone (or iPad), and what it frees in iCloud. A video stored only in iCloud says "In iCloud only".

Tidyroll never downloads originals to scan them. A photo or video only comes from iCloud if you open it to look at it.

I chose Limited access. Why is nothing pre-selected?

With Limited access, Tidyroll can only see the photos you picked, and it can't see your albums. To be safe, it never pre-selects anything for deletion: you choose every photo yourself. You can still review and clear the photos it can see.

To let Tidyroll see your whole library, open Tidyroll's Settings & details and tap Allow all photos, or go to iOS Settings › Apps › Tidyroll › Photos and choose Full Access.

I use an iCloud Shared Library. Is there anything to know?

Yes. Deleting a photo that's in a Shared Library removes it for everyone in it. iOS doesn't let apps tell which photos are shared, so Tidyroll reminds you right above the Delete button, and Apple's confirmation dialog is always the last step.

Will Tidyroll delete anything on its own?

Never. Photos you pick wait in Tidyroll's basket until you decide to delete them, and every delete needs Apple's confirmation. Favourites, photos in your albums and the suggested keeper of each group are never pre-selected. Turning a Live Photo into a still works the same way: the original goes to Recently Deleted, and you can get it back for 30 days.

Does Tidyroll upload my photos?

No. Tidyroll has no servers, no account and no tracking, and everything happens on your device. Read the privacy policy.
